1. INTRODUCTION

Link's Awakening is a wonderful remnant of the monochromatic Game Boy era.
An era in which the formula for great games was simple: primitive graphics
and rock-solid gameplay. Both these elements combined with the traditional
Zelda ingredients and a mysterious story are present in the game. If you
want to discover the roots of the Zelda series or just want to relive the
atmosphere of the past handheld decade, Link's Awakening is definitely worth
a look.
The aim of this in-depth FAQ is to provide comprehensive information on the
Heart Pieces.

2. OVERVIEW

HEART PIECES
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Link's heart containers are displayed at the bottom right of the screen and
they represent Link's health. You start the game with three heart containers
but eventually you can have a maximum of fourteen. Eight full containers can
be obtained by defeating all eight dungeon Nightmares. The remaining three
heart containers need to be pieced together out of smaller Heart Pieces.
There are exactly twelve Heart Pieces and for every four Heart Pieces you
find, you gain an additional heart container. Heart Pieces are hidden all
over Koholint Island and can be collected in random order.
On a final note, collecting Heart Pieces is not required to finish the game.
They boost Link's stamina and it's up to you to decide whether you need the
extra health or not.

LOCATIONS

Since Koholint Island is square shaped, coordinates can be assigned to each
location. These are listed for every Heart Piece in Section 4. The map below
demonstrates how the system works and lists the Heart Pieces (marked "#").

3. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: I think I've missed a Heart Piece! Is there any way I can still get it?
A: You needn't worry about missing Heart Pieces. You can always collect
Heart Pieces at any given moment if you have the necessary items.
Q: Do I really have to collect all those Heart Pieces? I want to finish the
game quickly, so are they essential?
A: No, you don't have to collect every Heart Piece. In fact, you don't even
have to collect a single one. Heart Pieces simply enhance Link's stamina.

4. HEART PIECES LOCATION LIST

HEART PIECE 1
- Location: West Mabe Village (Well)
- Coordinates: A-11
- Requirements: L-1 Sword
The first Heart Piece can be discovered by cutting down a bush using your L-1
Sword and falling off a ledge into a small well. Your prize can be found in a
patch of shallow water. Use the staircase to exit the well.

HEART PIECE 2
- Location: North Mysterious Woods
- Coordinates: E-5
- Requirements: L-1 Sword, Roc's Feather
This Heart Piece can be found on a patch of grass surrounded by pits. You
will need the Roc's Feather to jump over one of the holes.

HEART PIECE 3
- Location: East Mysterious Woods (Cave)
- Coordinates: A-6
- Requirements: L-1 Sword, Power Bracelet
You no doubt noticed this Heart Piece when you had to collect the Mushroom in
order to create Magic Powder. The Heart Piece can be found in the second room
of this small cave. Once you have the Power Bracelet you should be able to
lift the skulls that were previously blocking your path to the Heart Piece.

HEART PIECE 4
- Location: Ukuku Prairie (Cave)
- Coordinates: G-9
- Requirements: L-1 Sword, Power Bracelet, Pegasus Boots, Bombs (x2)
Bomb the entrance to this cave to clear the obstacles. Head inside and avoid
the first Spark. Next, equip your Pegasus Boots to dash past the obstacles
blocking your path. Proceed by running past the second Spark until you
venture into a dead end. Examine the bottom right wall using your L-1 Sword.
Poke at the small wall with your blade by pressing the A or B Button and
holding the Right Button on the D-pad until you hear a hollow sound. Bomb
the hollow part of the wall to discover a room with a Heart Piece inside.

HEART PIECE 5
- Location: Yarna Desert (Cave)
- Coordinates: O-13
- Requirements: L-1 Sword, Roc's Feather, Power Bracelet, Pegasus Boots,
Bombs (x1)
After defeating the Boss and retrieving the Angler Key, move towards the
centre of the quicksand to fall down to the cave below. Equip your L-1 Sword
and poke at the northern wall by pressing the A or B Button and holding the
Up Button on the D-pad. Search for the hollow part of the wall and bomb it.
A Heart Piece can be found at the back of the newly opened room.

HEART PIECE 6
- Location: Tal Tal Heights (Cave)
- Coordinates: O-3
- Requirements: L-1 Sword, Roc's Feather, Power Bracelet, Pegasus Boots,
Flippers
Jump into the water here and swim into the seemingly empty cave. The Heart
Piece is hidden underwater and to collect it you need to dive (B Button).
Dive straight forward starting from the entrance to find the Heart Piece.
Alternatively, you can fall down into this cave and land right on top of the
Heart Piece using a pit in the Tal Tal Mountain Range. The pit is located a
screen higher (O-2).

HEART PIECE 7
- Location: Kanalet Castle
- Coordinates: I-8
- Requirements: L-1 Sword, Roc's Feather, Power Bracelet, Flippers
Make your way to the Tal Tal Heights and explore the castle's moat (L-4).
Swim west and follow the moat until you reach the castle's bridge. Swim back
a screen and dive here by pressing the B Button. The Heart Piece can be
found near the centre of the screen.

HEART PIECE 8
- Location: Cemetery (Cave)
- Coordinates: G-8 or F-8
- Requirements: L-1 Sword, Roc's Feather, Power Bracelet, Bombs (x1),
Hook Shot
Make your way to the southwestern part of the graveyard and push the bottom
right tombstone north to reveal a hidden staircase. Enter the little cave and
defeat the Keesee. After bombing the cracked rock, equip your Hook Shot and
aim for the block in the bottom right corner. From this small platform jump
north and collect the Heart Piece. To reach the stairs, simply push the top
stone west and the bottom stone south. Alternatively, you can also enter this
cave by using the stairs to the west of the cemetery (F-8).

HEART PIECE 9
- Location: Animal Village (Cave)
- Coordinates: N-13
- Requirements: L-1 Sword, Roc's Feather, Power Bracelet, Pegasus Boots,
Bombs (x2), Hook Shot
Bomb the obstructed entrance to the cave in North East Animal Village. Once
inside, stand in the bottom right corner and use your Hook Shot to cross the
small pits. Quickly push the Hardhat Beetle in one of the holes using your
Hook Shot. Now place a bomb next to the rock in the upper right corner.
Continue through the newly opened passageway and deal with the Keesees.
You will find yourself on the opposite side of the top left room, where some
Gels are hiding. Pick up a bomb by pressing the A or B Button twice and throw
it near the cracked rock on the opposite side. Once the rock has been
shattered, make your way to the opposite side of the room. Now you can use
the Hook Shot to clear the pits, then simply grab the Heart Piece. To exit,
jump off the ledge and return.

HEART PIECE 10
- Location: Mt. Tamaranch (Cave)
- Coordinates: H-1
- Requirements: L-1 Sword, Roc's Feather, Power Bracelet, Pegasus Boots,
Flippers, Hook Shot, Bomb (x1)
This Heart Piece is hidden in a cave in Mt. Tamaranch. Make your way to the
Hen House (K-1) in the Tal Tal Mountain Range. There's an unfinished bridge
west of it. Equip your Hook Shot and use it to cross the gaps in the bridge.
Once you reach the other side of the bridge, cut down the bush to reveal a
hidden staircase. Inside the cave you will find two Keesees and a Skull.
Place a bomb in the small alcove at the bottom of the room to open up a
hidden passageway. Follow the passageway and avoid the enemies inside.
The Heart Piece is at the end of the room.

HEART PIECE 11
- Location: Tal Tal Mountain Range
- Coordinates: A-1 (Koholint Island) and C-3 (Turtle Rock)
- Requirements: L-1 Sword, Roc's Feather, Power Bracelet L-2, Pegasus Boots,
Flippers, Hook Shot, Mirror Shield, Ocarina (Frog's Song)
Nearly every item is required to collect this Heart Piece but it's in plain
sight. Enter Level 8 (Turtle Rock) and once inside, make your way to C-3.
Simply take the stairs to arrive outside. A Raven and a Mini-Moldorm are
guarding your prize.

HEART PIECE 12
- Location: North Mabe Village (Fishing Pond)
- Coordinates: B-9
- Requirements: Rupees (x20), Fishing skills
The final Heart Piece can be obtained by playing the fishing game at the
Fishing Pond in Mabe Village. You can actually collect this Heart Piece as
soon as you've gathered a small amount of rupees. Bring at least 20 rupees
and talk to the fisherman to play the game. The large fish (lunker) swimming
nearest to you has swallowed the Heart Piece. Simply reel in the fish to
receive the it on top of twenty rupees. The game will probably take more than
one attempt, as the smaller fish (runts) will go for the bait much faster
than the lunkers.
