A. INTRODUCTION
=============================================================================

Link's Awakening is the very first 'pocket' version of the highly successful
Zelda series and the game is (in my opinion) one of the most fun games ever
created for the original Game Boy. Great graphics, an interesting story and
classic gameplay make for a worthy addition to any Game Boy collection.

The purpose of this in-depth FAQ is to provide comprehensive information
about the Secret Seashells.

Note
----
This FAQ covers only the original Game Boy version, not the DX version.

B. OVERVIEW
=============================================================================

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
SECRET SEASHELLS
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Secret Seashells are optional items hidden all over Koholint Island.
You don't need to collect a single Secret Seashell in order to finsh the
game but the reward is well worth the search.

There are a total of twenty-six Secret Seashells and they can be found in a
variety of places. Although there are twenty-six of them, you only need to
collect twenty to receive your reward.

Pay a visit to the Seashell Mansion (K-9) once you've collected at least
twenty Secret Seashells and you will receive the L-2 Sword. Not only is this
Sword more powerful than your default Sword, it also has the ability to fire
arrows of power if Link is at full health.

Regardless, it's up to you to decide whether or not you want a more powerful
version of your basic L-1 Sword.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
LOCATIONS
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since Koholint Island is square shaped, coordinates can be assigned to each
location. These are listed for every Secret Seashell in Section D. The small
map below demonstrates how the system works.

C. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
=============================================================================

Q: How many Secret Seashells are there?
There are a total of twenty-six Secret Seashells.

Q: Is it possible to collect more than twenty Secret Seashells?
A: Yes, you can collect all twenty-six of them. But do note that it is
impossible to collect Secret Seashells after the L-2 Sword is created.
The remaining Secret Seashells will then disappear or transform into
   rupees.

Q: I've missed a Secret Seashell! What now? I really want the L-2 Sword!
A: Easy there. For starters, you can always collect twenty-five Secret
Seashells provided you have the necessary items (Section D.) There is
only one Secret Seashell that needs to be collected while in possession
of the Flying Rooster (#25). If you miss it, it will become unreachable.

Q: How early can I get the L-2 Sword in terms of Levels?
A: You can collect at least twenty Secret Seashells after finishing Level 4 -
Angler's Tunnel. The Flippers will get you the remaining Secret Seashells.

next to the cracks on the Western wall here. Enter the small

Information: To collect this Secret Seashell, start by entering the cave on
I-12. Inside, avoid the moving Skulls, as they will try to
attack you. Head West -avoiding more moving Skulls- and place
a bomb in the small niche (Western wall) to reveal a hidden
room. Use the Roc's Feather to jump across the holes and use
the stairs to continue to the next room. Proceed carefully and
dispose of the Gels who will pop up. Next, push the block into
the hole and continue until you face a barricade of blocks.

The small map below shows how to move them correctly:

               X: Block in original position

               |_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _|

Finally, exit the cave. Once outside, quickly head North. Try
to avoid the Zirro's, as they deliver reasonable damage. The

left in the first room of his basement and make sure to deal

deal with them, after they awake:

               - Bombs. One will do.

Mountain Range. Traverse them until you're outside. Now
proceed as far East as possible. Past the caves and the four
waterfalls. At the very end you will find a cave. There's a
passageway filled with shallow water and Piranhas except for
one suspicious spot that seems to be dry. Bomb the wall there
and take the stairs in the newly opened room (watch out for
the Piranhas). Next, try the little chest puzzle. There are 5
chests. Try to collect as many rupees as possible. The best
you can do is 80 rupees or four chests. After that, head
outside and open the treasure chest containing the Secret

entering the caves on H-2 (Tal Tal Mountain Range) and
continue until you're outside. Once again, head East until you
reach a spot with four waterfalls and a large path that leads
North into the mountains. From here, you should be able to see
three rocks. You can't reach them yet, however. Head West
twice, North once and finally East twice to reach the place.

Secret Seashell 24
------------------

small island on your raft ride that can only be accessed by
a staircase. To reach it, head to Level 6: Face Shrine.
Once inside, you need to make your way to A-2. The block in
front of the treasure chest here will be down, so take the
staircase behind chest. You will find yourself on the tiny
island with an unopened chest. Open it to find your reward.

Secret Seashell 25
------------------
Location: Kanalet Castle

               Flippers, Hookshot, Flying Rooster
Information: There are five consecutive holes South-west of Kanalet Castle
and you can only get past them using the Flying Rooster.
Neither the Pegasus Boots + Roc's Feather or Hookshot will
work. Just equip your L-2 Power Bracelet and pick up the
Flying Rooster. Use the D-pad to guide the Flying Rooster
(and yourself) across the five pits. Let go on the other side
and take the stairs to reach a small cave with a treasure

Information: The final Secret Seashell can be found inside Level 7: Eagle
Tower, in the Tal Tal Mountain Range. Make your way to A-3 on
the first floor. Take the stairs -avoid the Sparks- and head
for the Northern door. Quickly dive into the left corner and
keep your Shield up. Let every Tile break against your Shield
and try to stay away from the Anti-fairy. Once every Tile is
gone, drop down one of the three Western holes to land on a
ledge on the first floor. Proceed North to find a treasure
chest with the final Secret Seashell.
