D. General Information

To access the multi-player mode, choose your file from the main menu. Then touch
the "Start" button in the bottom right. Instead of choosing "Adventure," choose
"Battle."

On the top screen lists your stats.

* - The Link portrait is initially smiling wide. If you disconnect on a regular
basis, he will get less and less happy, eventually making a growling face.

*1 - You gain Battle Points every time you win a match. Battle Points determine
your rank.

*2 - Your Win Percentage is based on your total wins and losses.

On the bottom screen, there are a few different options:

Change Name
- Change your Wifi name.

Friend Roster
- Here you can add and remove friends from your friend list. You can also find
your own friend code here.

Big Plays
- A list of all the Big Plays you've completed.

Choose Nintendo WFC to connect to the network. There are five different options
here:

- Searches for someone in your friend list who is also searching.

Vs. Rival (N. America)
- Searches for someone in North America who has a similar record to yours.

Vs. Rival (Worldwide)
- Searches for someone in the entire world who has a similar record to yours.

- Searches for anyone in North America.

Vs. Anyone (Worldwide)
- Searches for anyone in the entire world.

Once you find an opponent, their name and stats will be displayed on your
screen.

Before the game begins, one of the players (chosen at random) will choose the
stage, out of a possible eight different ones. Each stage has two bases; one
red base and one blue base, according to each player's color. Also in each stage
are various sized golden triangle gems. These are scattered out in each course.
You have 120 seconds each turn to try and accomplish your objective.

Here is a basic run-down of what each player is trying to accomplish.

As Link...

You walk around, picking up the gems and walking back to your colored base. The
catch is that you walk much slower while carrying a gem, so you're at more of a
risk of being caught by the other player. Once you're close to your base, tap
the screen where you want to throw the gem and it will turn from gold to
whatever color your base is. Depending on its size, you will gain points. Small
gems are worth 1 point, medium gems are worth 5, and large gems are worth 15.
As Link, the only time you can see the Phantoms on the upper-map is when you're
carrying a gem. Otherwise, they don't show up on the map.

As the Phantoms...

You control three Phantoms, drawing their route on your touch screen. When a
Phantom gets close to Link, it will automatically swing its sword. If it hits
him, Link is down and the players change turns. Phantoms, in my opinion, are
much harder to control than Link because there are three of them, and they're a
bit slower than Link. You can see Link on the touch screen as long as he's not
in a safe-zone.

There are also power-ups which appear randomly in the stage. These are small
bubbles with items inside them. These can do a variety of things, including
moving every gem from its place, increase your speed, or create a clone of
yourself to confuse the other player. If you run over an opponent's power-up,
you destroy it so they cannot use it. A helpful tactic to use.

Once each player has had three turns as Link and three turns as the Phantoms,
the game is over and whoever has the most points is declared the winner. Those
points are then added to the winner's total Battle Points. Some additional
points may be added for any Big Plays that were executed (see section G)

E. Strategies

/__\ Don't Cloud Your Opponent's Base!
This is probably one of the most common mistakes I see when playing people
online. They put all three of their Phantoms right around my base. While this
might seem like a good strategy, it's actually a good way to end up losing.
There are several things you can do as Link when this happens. If your opponent
has any gems in their base, walk over, pick them up, and throw them into a safe-
zone. They'll turn gold again and they will lose those points. If your opponent
doesn't have any gems, pick up the large gems and throw them close to your base.
Then when it's your turn as the Phantoms, guard all the gems you threw near your
base. Your opponent won't be able to get any of them. When it's your turn as
Link again, all the gems will be right near your base and you can collect the
points.

/__\ Throw Your Claimed Gems Into A Pile!
This is especially important when you have a lot of them. After dropping them in
your base, throw them outside your base in a pile, preferably far away from a
safe zone. Then, when it's your turn as the Phantoms, keep one Phantom guarding
your pile of gems. Your opponent will be unable to reach any of them to try and
steal them. If you leave the gems inside your base, they can easily sneak in,
grab one, then jam when you're not paying attention.

/__\ Toss The Big Gems!
(Thanks to the dozens of people who emailed me this tactic)
As long as you're not going for the "No Dribble" Big Play, toss the large, 15
point gems after you pick them up. This is much faster than walking with them,
and will allow you to reach your base in much less time.

/__\ Watch The Map!
A mini-map is shown on the top screen of the DS (or the touch screen if you're
playing as the Phantoms). This is extremely important to use, whether as Link
or the Phantoms. When you're playing as Link, the Phantoms only appear on the
map when you're holding a gem. When you're playing as the Phantoms, Link will
appear as long as he isn't in a safe-zone. Watching the map can be essential to
avoiding death or trapping Link.

/__\ Grab Power-Ups!
If you see a power-up on the screen which corresponds to your color, by all
means, grab it! There are no bad power-ups, so get everything you can. One
power-up that is especially helpful is the one that scatters the gems all over
the map. Another pretty helpful one is the speed increase as Link. You can run
much faster while holding gems.

/__\ As Link, Roll!
Rolling, while doesn't seem like it matters much, actually makes Link move a
little bit faster. So when you're running from Phantoms or to a safe zone,
hold your stylus at the edge of the screen and move it back and forth in a fast,
swift motion. Link will do a roll. Be careful though, if you do too many rolls
too fast, Link will become dizzy and pause for a couple seconds.

/__\ Don't Disconnect!
This is not only considered very rude, but you will lose 30 Battle Points and
make your opponent very angry! In addition, if you disconnect enough, a mad Link
face will appear next to your name on Wifi, and people won't want to play with
you anymore because you disconnect all the time. If you're in a match and
you're losing, take it like a man and lose. Maybe you can pick up pointers from
the person who beat you.

/__\ Take Shortcuts!
On some of the maps, there are staircases which lead to the other side of the
map. As the Phantoms, this can cause a lot of confusion because Link suddenly
appears on the other side of the course. Be alert while playing as the Phantoms
to any staircases, and try to keep at least one Phantom on the opposite side of
the course as the other two.

/__\ Big Gems Are Worth More!
The big gems are worth a whopping 15 points, so if you're able to, go after
those first! Even if you can't get them all the way to your base, getting them
More towards your base is helpful so your opponent can't get them when it
becomes their turn.

 /\
/__\ Guard Your Big Gems!
If you have any big gems in your base, by all means, GUARD THEM WITH YOUR LIFE!
Or at least have one Phantom always stationed near your base. If you keep
possession of a couple large gems, that's an instant 30 points for you, and it
would be much harder for your opponent to win.

 /\
/__\ Start Drawing The Phantoms' Course Before The Round Starts!
While the 3, 2, 1 countdown is on, you're still able to draw out the Phantoms'
courses on the touch screen. This can save you a few seconds, and it's helpful
so that right when the round starts, your Phantoms are already on the move.

/__\ Make Sure Your DS Is Calibrated!
Calibrate your touch screen every once in a while. This will ensure you'll be
drawing the paths you want, and not way off on the side of the screen because
your touch screen isn't calibrated properly.

/__\ Always Charge Your DS' Battery!
It's no fun to see the red light of doom on your DS in the middle of a battle,
because that will more than likely give you an instant loss if your battery
dies. Always make sure your battery is nice and charged before beginning a Wifi
match.

F. Ranks

Each player is assigned a rank according to how many Battle Points they have.
Here is each rank, from best to worst.

A - 3500 or more Battle Points

B - 3000 to 3499 Battle Points

C - 2500 to 2999 Battle Points

D - 2000 to 2499 Battle Points

E - 1500 to 1999 Battle Points

F - 1000 to 1499 Battle Points

G - 500 to 999 Battle Points

H - 499 or less Battle Points

G. Big Plays
################################################################################
"Big Plays" are events that happen in a battle which can score you some golden
ship parts in Adventure mode. Once you perform four Big Plays, you can visit
the assistant on Cannon Island to claim your first golden part. Every other four
Big Plays after that also gives you a new golden part, for a total of four
golden ship parts in Adventure mode. Here is a list of all the Big Plays:

1. No Items
Complete the whole match without picking up any of your own helpful items. (You
are still allowed to destroy your opponent's items. I've double-checked this.)

2. No Dribble
Win, but don't drop force gems outside bases or safe zones.

3. Limit
Kill Link within the LAST 20 seconds two times.

4. Solo
Kill Link in any one turn using only one Phantom.

5. Break
Break ten or more of your opponent's helpful items.

6. Take
Pick up ten or more of your own helpful items.

7. Perfect Master
Complete "Perfect" and "Limit" at the same time.

8. Quick
Kill Link within the FIRST 20 seconds two times.

9. Miracle
Win with only one point.

10. Get Everything
Win, turning all the force gems your color.

11. Guardian
Win without letting your opponent score any points.

12. Perfect
Complete both "Get Everything" and "Guardian" together.

13. No Miss
Win without being taken down once as Link.

14. Guard King
Kill Link with a Phantom all three turns.

15. Master
Complete "No Miss" and "Guardian" at the same time.

16. Battle Master
Complete "Limit" and "Master" at the same time.

H. Power-Ups
################################################################################
Power-ups appear randomly on the map and help each player in a certain way.
To obtain a power-up, simply walk over it. You can also walk over your
opponent's power-ups to destroy them. Here is a list of the power-ups:

+30 Seconds
(Link)
Adds 30 seconds to the clock.
STRATEGY:
Always pick it up. This can never do harm to your score.

-30 Seconds
(Phantoms)
Subtracts 30 seconds from the clock.
STRATEGY:
Always pick it up. This will make your opponent have less time to collect gems.

Create Clone
(Both)
Creates a clone of Link or a Phantom to confuse the other player. This clone
vanishes after a short period of time.
STRATEGY:
Rarely pick it up. It's a generally useless item and isn't very effective.

Scatter Gems
(Both)
This power-up will scatter the force gems all over the course, which can
completely turn a game around.
STRATEGY:
If you're losing, pick it up. If you're winning, it's generally a good idea
to avoid it, since you risk scattering your claimed gems all over the map. This
power-up, unlike the other ones, will show up as a circle with a triangle in
the center of it on the mini-map.

Speed Upgrade
(Both)
Makes your character (either Link or the Phantoms) move faster for a short
period of time.
STRATEGY:
Always pick it up. Especially as Link. After getting one as Link, try to go
for the large gems. You'll move much quicker while carrying them.

Attack Upgrade
(Phantoms)
Makes the Phantoms attack quicker and have a wider attack range.
STRATEGY:
Not a very useful power-up. If it's not right in your range, don't bother
picking it up.

Defense Upgrade
(Link)
Allows Link to take a hit from a Phantom and not die.
STRATEGY:
A great power-up which can prove to be useful in many instances. If you see this
power-up, pick it up. You'll be able to withstand an extra hit from a Phantom.

Strength Upgrade
(Link)
Allows Link to walk much faster while carrying a force gem.
STRATEGY:
Always pick it up, unless it's really far out of your way. This can help you
score some big points without being caught by the Phantoms.

Wind Walls Activated
(Phantoms)
Activates the wind walls in the course. This can be helpful by preventing Link
from taking certain routes.
STRATEGY:
Unless the course you're on uses a lot of wind walls, it's typically not a very
useful power-up. Only collect it if it's in your range.

I. Trading
################################################################################
Not only can you battle through a Wifi match, you can also trade treasure and
ship parts. Here are the steps you take to trade items with someone:

(You must have Bombs and the Bow first)

1. On Mercay Island, travel just southeast of the Temple of the Ocean King.
There will be a bombable wall. Bomb it and enter.
2. Jump over the platforms to the right and you'll see an eye on the northern
wall. Shoot an arrow at that eye to open a bridge to the south. Walk across the
bridge and out the cave's exit.
3. Here, climb the stairs to the right and shoot an arrow at the eye to the
left. A statue will appear.
4. Hit the statue with your sword to make a beam of light come out.
5. Tap the statue and rotate it so it's facing northwest (directly at the
Temple of the Ocean King).
6. Follow the light and place a bomb at the wall where the light shines.
7. Enter the cave, and follow it around to the right.
8. Exit the cave and talk to the man there. His name is Freedle. He'll explain
his "magic boxes." You can step on the switch outside to create a bridge that
connects to the main island.

Put any one, two, or three things inside the boxes you want to trade with
someone else. They do the same, and then you go on a Wifi battle. After the
battle is over, the trade will be complete and your items will be traded.
